Part 2 of 4: Discovering Your Intrinsic Genius

Last week, we discussed the shift: the strategy that built our careers will not necessarily build what comes next. We asked the question and sat with it:
If working harder is no longer the answer, what is?
The answer is not something we need to learn.
It is something we have already earned and, in many cases, stopped noticing.
We Call It Ordinary Because It’s Ours
Here’s the trap: the very things that make us most valuable often feel too familiar to count as expertise.
We walk into a room and know—before anyone fully explains it—exactly where the real problem is hiding.
We read a person’s hesitation before they say a word.
We know which battles are worth having and which ones to let go without a second thought.
We do not call this genius.
We call it “just how I am.”
We have spent so long treating these abilities as ordinary that we may have begun to discount them ourselves assuming that because they come naturally, they cannot be valuable.
But ease does not mean insignificance.
Often, it is evidence of mastery.
What Intrinsic Genius Actually Is
Intrinsic genius is not a personality trait.
It is not charisma. And it is not talent in the way we were taught to think about talent as something we either have or do not have.
Intrinsic genius is:
Pattern recognition: Seeing the shape of a problem before all its pieces have even arrived.
Discernment: Knowing the difference between what matters and what only looks urgent.
Judgment: The instinct built through decades of decisions that carried real consequences.
Wisdom: Not facts we memorized, but understanding we lived our way into.
Perspective: The vantage point that only altitude and time can build.
None of this may show up on a résumé.
But all of it shows up the moment we walk into a room.
Why We Overlook It
We often overlook our intrinsic genius because it feels ordinary to us.
The things we do best rarely feel difficult. Yet many of us were trained throughout our working lives to equate value with effort, as if anything that comes naturally cannot possibly be worth charging for.
But the market has never truly measured effort.
It measures outcomes.
It values certainty.
It responds to the confidence of someone who has already been where the room is trying to go.
Our intrinsic genius produces exactly that.
We have simply been giving parts of it away because we assumed everyone else could do what we do.
They cannot.
And it may be time to stop treating your most valuable contribution as though it is simply “who you are.”
It is an asset. Earned over time, refined through experience, and ready to be positioned with intention.
